Who We Are

Van M. Mankwitz

I have been very fortunate to have experienced a diverse business career. Upon college graduation, following family tradition, I was the third generation to enter the automobile industry. During this twenty-five year period I owned and operated new car dealerships, lease companies, a fleet wholesaling company, and the Colorado Auto Auction which was eventually sold to the Manheim Auction Group in 1985. At this point in time, the leveraged buyout business was in full swing and I put my diversified investment theory into action. Through my own funds and leveraging with borrowed funds I purchased mid-size companies in various industries, including food and grocery, consumer brands, banking, software, and private aviation, to name just a few. Most of these companies were market leaders by the time I sold them. Along the way, I have been fortunate enough to build lasting relationships throughout the corporate and private business communities that I continue to utilize today. I remain an active investor in both a majority and minority position in companies of various sizes and industries.

I have spent most of my business career providing operational support and professional services in accounting and finance. My primary emphasis has been in the negotiation, structuring and tax planning for mergers, acquisitions, joint ventures and leveraged buyouts. From 1978 to 2001, I was President of the CPA firm of Shenkin, Kurtz Baker & Co. which was sold to CIBZ, Inc. (NYSE: CBZ). From 1995 to 2010 I was a member of the board and chairman of the audit and finance committee of HCA-Health One in Denver and am currently a member of the community board of Wells Fargo, N.A. I am a member of the board of directors of CIBER, Inc. (NYSE: CBR) where I serve as Chairman of the Audit Committee and Chairman of the Compensation Committee. Since November 2009, I have also been a member of the board and Chairman of the audit committee of Pembrook Mining Corp., a privately-held, Canadian based international mining company with principle operations in South American and Mexico. I helped form and was a partner in the Colorado Rockies Baseball Club and have been very active in the real estate, communication and healthcare industries. I am a Co-Managing Member of Mankwitz Kurtz Investments, LLC, a Denver based private equity firm, which I formed in 2001. In 2008, I formed Kurtz Financial, LLC, a consulting firm specializing in restructuring, turnarounds and mergers and acquisitions advisory services.

I currently serve as president of Stratford Capital Investments, a niche investment company focusing on high-yield, non-correlated sources of income. In addition, I am Chairman of the Board of Tivoli Distributing Company, a craft beer distribution company in Colorado. Prior to 2010, I enjoyed a 14 year career trading the Standard and Poor's 500 stock index futures contract for my own account on the floor of the Chicago Mercantile Exchange. This period encompassed the dot-com bubble, 9/11, the housing bubble, and the meltdown of 2008. I saw firsthand the financial and economic consequences of two of the biggest boom-bust cycles in our Country's history. While at the CME, I was elected by my peers to a variety of positions. I served on judiciary committees, planning committees, and was one of the key liasons between the floor trading community and company management. I am invested and involved in several companies in addition to those above. These run the gamut from venture capital to real-estate to motion picture production.
